​​​Notes Before You Bring a Stray

  • Call ahead: Many shelters require appointments or have waitlists for intake — especially for owner surrenders or strays that are not under animal control jurisdiction.

  • Animal Control: County animal services often pick up found strays and hold them for a period before transfer to a shelter.

  • Health & behavior: Some shelters assess health and temperament before intake; others focus on foster-based intake.
